Build Linux Kernel – Step by step

Step 1: Open Terminal console
Step 2: connect as “root” user:
#su –
Step 3: Go to your folder which is contain new kernel, ex: /home/mykernel
#cd /home/mykernel
Step 4: Download linux kernel (reference: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel)
My choice is kernel v2.6:
#wget http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.39.tar.bz2
Step 5: extract kernel
#bzip2 –dc linux-2.6.39.tar.bz2 | tar xvf –
Step 6: move to folder extracted
#cd linux-2.6.39
Step 7:
#make dep
Step 8:
#make clean
Step 9:
#make bzImage
Note: Step 7 –> 9: you can do with one command: #make dep clean bzImage
Step 10:
#make modules
Step 11:
#make modules_install
Step 12: Install kernel (to current kernel – make sure backup before do that)
#make install
